      Southeastern Lacrosse 2013-2014

Our program is being led by a committee of dedicated and passionate workers. Far and beyond all other characteristics of any educational staff, our teachers here at Southeastern have proven time and again that our efforts are greater together than apart. The idea for creating a lacrosse team was instantly met with encouragement and offerings to help wherever needed. The entire school is behind us and the students are eager to build a new sports team. From all the support, four individuals arose to take charge and direction of the lacrosse movement.

Meet the team:
Head Coach/Recruitment Director - Brent Petrone (Math Teacher)
Assistant Coach/Fundraising/Marketing Director- Brendan Campbell (History Teacher)
Academic Liaison - Nicole Herman (Science Teacher)
Program Leadership Director - Joe Rider (Counselor)

Brent Petrone - Coach and Recruitment Director: In this role, Brent will organize team activities and practice plans. Brent and Joe have been working to create seasonal and practice plans for the 2013-14 school year. Brent is working with the rest of the teaching staff to generate interest in the sport. He has teachers recruiting for him who see each student from their specific grade level. This is to help inform all students in the building about the new sport that is making its way into both the Southeastern and Detroit community.

Brendan Campbell - Assistant Coach/ Fundraising/ Marketing Director: Brendan is a key component in our program's development process. Brendan is using his vast network to build a giant support net for lacrosse at Southeastern. Brendan will be responsible for generating and implementing fundraising opportunities for the program. Brendan has been vital in the writing of this grant and reaching out to various leaders in the lacrosse world. This position will require Brendan to produce program publications in support of the lacrosse team at Southeastern.

Nicole Herman - Academic Liaison: Nicole is one of our strongest teachers here Southeastern. She will be a critical academic piece of our lacrosse team. Our vision for lacrosse at Southeastern is to help increase school spirit and academics. Nicole will be working with the team to help increase grades and academic achievement. Her goal is to ensure that our program is the highest academically achieving sports team at Southeastern.

Joe Rider - Program Leadership Director: In this role, Joe oversees all aspects of the new lacrosse program. Joe organizes meetings to collaborate on program development. Paired with Brent, the two are creating seasonal and practice plans for the 2013-14 school year. Joe’s role will require him to reach out to neighboring schools to organize games and scrimmages. Joe will work closely with the Athletic Director of Southeastern and MHSAA to assure the team is fully compliant with State, District, and School regulations.

As we continue to build the program, we plan to expand to include a community-based leadership committee. We plan to have parents and community members help with the future of the program. Our focus and goals will always have the foundation of expanding and solidifying the program at Southeastern. Our leadership team is fully dedicated to the task of engineering a program that revolves around communication, organizational integrity, and academics.

As a program, we hope to drive academic achievement at Southeastern by introducing a new athletic team to the school. Our belief is that with more extra-curricular activities, there will be more student attendance, participation, and pride inside our classrooms.

Our goal is to help students learn and participate in a sport they might not otherwise experience. We hope that other public schools in Detroit will follow our lead and help bring lacrosse into the city as a solidified sport. Since there are no other public schools in Detroit with a lacrosse team, we are excited to provide an experience of leaving the city and exploring the surrounding towns to our students. So many of our students have never been outside of Detroit; therefore, this aspect alone will be a great learning experience for them.
